Hi Sheffield hatter,

I think i can sort out your problem.

The Bull and Oak was a small pub with bay windows either side of its entrance, the pub was a Whitbread tied house and its address was 76-78 the wicker
the pub changed its name to the Front Room and was demolished in 1998.

The Brown Cow was a larger three storey pub that was at 68 the wicker,i think this pub is now a fast food outlet.

Cheers Alan

That sounds about right. The Brown Cow is the one with the photos that show a Halal Fried Chicken takeaway, but it's been mistakenly labelled as the Front Room. I'm sure Dave will be able to sort it out when he gets around to going through the That Doesn't Go There forum.

Cheers

Hi agian Sheffield hatter,

I had a good crawl in Sheffield on 9 November 1985 but with no camera.
The wicker was a really good short street for pubs

These were the pubs i did on the wicker that day

Station Hotel Tetley tied house
The Viaduct Tetley tied house
Bull and Oak Whitbread tied house
Brown Cow Stones tied house
New White Lion Tetley tied house, this was a really nice pub
Big Gun Stones tied house.

I also noticed that you did a short review of the Meadow Street Hotel this was a Wards tied house that i did in 1983 when i did a Wards pub crawl in Sheffield,i did 24 of their tied houses plus 2 other pubs in one day.

I wish i had taken photos of them as i bet most have now gone for good.

Cheers Alan

Just one of these is still open (the Big Gun), but only one has been demolished (Bull & Oak). The only one I've been in was the Station - long before I moved to Sheffield I came here for a football match (Luton at Hillsborough) and had a pre-match drink there - around 1986, I think. It is now used as a temporary hostel for asylum seekers.

I've found a photo of the Meadow Street Hotel, which was demolished four or five years ago, on Flickr. I persuaded the photographer to join Pubs Galore and he has uploaded the photo. Have you still got a list of the other 25 pubs you did that day?

That's an impressive list. :notworthy:

Ten of them are closed, of which six have been demolished. I've marked in bold the 17 I have been into (not all on the same day, I hasten to add) - had a drink in 16 of them (the real ale had gone off when I went in the Scholar this year).

Royal Standard 156 st marys road Wards Still going strong
Hermitage Inn 13 london road Wards Now called the Scholar - a student pub
Barrel Inn 123 london road Wards Still going strong but no real ale here now
Earl of Arundel and Surrey 528 queens road Wards Closed and its future in doubt
Bridge Inn 509 london road Wards Closed a couple of years ago, now a floor tiles showroom
Crown Inn 2 albert road Wards Still going strong
Victoria Hotel 203 gleadless road Wards Still going strong
Compleat Angler snig hill Samuel Smiths This was part of what until recently was the Boardwalk, closed due to a dispute between the new owner and the gig organiser. Some Sam Smiths signage still evident
Royal Oak 11 hollins croft Wards Closed and demolished
Red House 168 solly street Wards Still going strong
Queens Hotel 85 scotland street Wards Closed for many years but not demolished
Shakespear Inn 146 gibralter street Wards Reopened last year as beer and cider free house (Shakespears) and doing very well
Nags Head 325 shalesmoor Wards Demolished for road improvements about five years ago
Meadow Street Hotel 110 meadow street Wards Demolished '08 and replaced by student housing just before the money ran out
Eversley House 117 upperthorpe road Shipstones Now called the Office – a few years ago was the Moon, an Abbeydale pub, but reverted to former name when they gave up trying to sell real ale to the locals
Scarborough Arms 34 addy street Wards Still going strong but no real ale
The Bathfield weston street Wards Demolished for housing in about '99
Old Grindstone 3 crooks Wards Still going strong – recent refurbishment
Hallamshire House 49 commonside Wards Still going strong – now part of the Thornbridge empire
Brown Cow 1 mowbray street Wards Now the Riverside and still going strong
Manchester Hotel 108 nursery street Wards Now the Harlequin and still going strong - in fact a bit of a destination pub
The Harlequin 26 johnson street Wards Demolished and the name transferred to the Manchester around the corner
Roebuck Tavern 72 charles street Wards Still going strong
Red Lion 109 charles street Wards Still going strong
The Cossack 45 howard street Tetley Demolished
Howard Hotel howard street Tetley Still going strong (Marstons)
