In an age of Micro-Brewing (remember that term? ) garnering headlines in terms of innovation in brewing, there’s a sort of silent agreement that the elder statesmen of Fuller’s deserve nothing but utmost respect.
And so they should. I’ve reiterated my true belief that London Porter is still the benchmark for the style in the UK, and when you look at the entire range, it’s just hit after hit after hit…Bengal Lancer, 1845, Discovery…and don’t even get me started on the Past Masters range or recent collaborations with Hardknott (http://www.hand-pumped.co.uk/archive/June12/english_experiment_240612.htm) and Marble. (http://goodfoodgoodbeer.wordpress.com/tag/marble-brewery/)
So when a new stout is added to that gilded pantheon, it’s time to seek it out. Black Cab (what else) Stout (4.2%abv) is so typical of Fuller’s beer – nothing fancy, flash, or headline-grabbing – just well brewed, super-balanced beer. As black as, well, a London Cab – there’s mild, smoky roasted coffee, sweet milk chocolate and a cheesecake-base biscuity body all wrapped up in a smooth, smooth package. The finish is not too dry – having a ever-so-slight sourness coming in late – but the overall effect is of an immensely satisfying Stout that should please any Londoner.
