Or Leicester?

Leicester Derby Sheffield, all on megatrain route from London :)
I shall be in Derby eve of 16Nov, for beerfest at Uttoxeter races next day...

Don't forget you already have Andy's b/c tour in the calendar...

As it's now September and the subject hasn't been raised until now, I just assumed that Andy's Black Country trip had become this year's meet up by default? I suspect a lot of people will be hard pushed to squeeze another one in before Christmas.

I would be happy to have another meet-up apart from the BC crawl :nishelypished:, if we go by previous meets it would be the second Friday in November which is the 9th this year , i could make this but might struggle with other dates .

I still have loads of annual leave to use up so any excuse to get out of work and into the pub carries serious consideration on my part!

There aren't!!! :moremad:

I had to spend one whole night there about 4 years ago as that's where Matalan had the massive warehouse we had implemented for them.

That was long enough.

Of course it may have changed..............

Now then, is this going to happen in 2012 or shall we have it as our spring time 2013 jaunt instead?

Now that the dust has settled on The Black Country Tour ,I thought I would bump this threat to see if there are other takers for a meet up this side of Christmas.

There seemed to be some agreement on Derby or Leicester, although the venue seems less important than finding a date that suits a reasonable numbers of PuGers. From past experience Fridays seem to be popular.

Therefore I could make Nov 9th like Oggy

Nov 16th also fine, could trainman be persuaded to pitch up to Derby early for this before his Uttoxeter fest the next day?

Nov 23 rd also OK with me

The rest of the Fridays up to Christmas are more tricky, with some work related outings already in the diary.

Any other takers....... or are we looking into 2013 ?

Nov 9 or 23 fine with us, and Derby or Leicester fine too.

Nov 16th we are in Chertsey for the Egham beer festival so couldn't make it then.

I lived in Derby for 5 years. There is expectional pubs such as Brunswick, Alexandra Hotel, Olde Dolphin, Flowerpot and few others. Very pretty walkable to do the all. Leaving Brunswick as last port of call as it is only stones throw from train station.

Next year might be better from two or three points of view. For those of us whose livers are still in recovery mode following the very enjoyable Black Country jaunt last Friday, November might come a little too soon. And with Derby being on the East Midlands line from London, it might be a bit tricky getting reasonably cheap train fares at such short notice. Also people have already made plans that will affect attendance if November is the choice.

Perhaps next February/March might attract more people? We did Liverpool on Friday 2nd March this year, what about a similar date for Derby next year?

Yeah, Feb/March is best for all I think as Xmas is coming up and most of us won't be able to find a mutually acceptable date at short notice.

Currently I can do any Friday Feb-Mar but would rather avoid the 8th.

Right guys and gals.. Personally Derby has far superior pubs than Leicester (I may be biased but it is truth :))

I fancy making this trip for PuG meet up and I have inside knowledge of Derby pubs so I might draw up route if you all don't mind. Don't need to bring your A to Z map or whatever. Will know if I am going when the date has been made. Hope this helps.

February/March 2013 would now seem sensible and give people time to take full advantage of advanced rail deals.

All Friday's in February are fine with me apart from 22nd.

Could make any Friday in March apart from 29th.

I'm free in Feb/March except for the 1st March.

Leicester has 9 GBG pubs in LE1 including a Slug & Lettuce ( but it is listed as selling Oakham Inferno) and certainly I don't mind another trip round Derby (12 GBG pubs in DE1). Anywhere with nice pubs and a main line station would probably do me.

Apologies OB. I seem to have missed your earlier post when scrolling through to see who couldn't do which dates. :o:o

1st February hasn't been objected to yet. I'm on holiday 8th Feb, and Quinno also objected to that (or was it the 8th March?). BF can't do 22nd Feb or 29th Mar, so that leaves 1st or 15th Feb and 15th or 22nd Mar with no objections so far. This is harder than it looked at first glance.

We will probably be staying in Leicester at some time in March as Leicester beer festival will be on. Just waiting for them to sort dates out as they are likely to change venue to the Rugby ground and will have to fit in with fixtures. Aside from that, any date in March should be ok for us.

15th and 22nd are the only ones free in Feb. Don't mind either Derby or Leicester. Will go with the flow on that as we can get to both easily, although I personally prefer Leicester as the Salmon is fantastic.

1st Feb is a definate no for me. 15th Feb is a ????. Both March dates (15th & 22nd) are fine at the moment. Don't mind where we go to be honest!

Quinno
09-10-2012, 13:46

It was March 8th but I only object in a 'rather have another day' sense as it will be my sister's birthday so it's always useful to keep it free.

Using a modicum of logic, which is unusual for me it looks like we have narrowed the date down to either 15th or 22nd March with the most likely venue Leicester.

Are there any problems with either date or venue ?

Below are list of people who have OK'd the date and said something about the venue:

Quinno - erring towards Leicester. Happy with 22nd
Roger - Leicester. Happy with 22nd
Gill & Ray - Leicester. No objection to 22nd.
Trainman - erring towards Leicester
Sheffieldhatter - Happy with 22nd
OB - Unfussy. Happy with 22nd.
Bucking Fastard - Happy with 22nd
Hoppy - Derby.
Rob - Leicester, with caveats. No objection to 22nd.
Strongers - Leicester. No objection to 22nd.
PSM - Leicester. Happy with 22nd
A&H - Leicester. Happy with 22nd
Oggy - Leicester. No objection to 22nd.
Gann/SN21 - Leicester. No objection to 22nd

So it looks like Leicester is the choice unless there's a late swing.

The 22nd also looking good. If others post their preferences and availability I'll keep this updated.

I've never been to Leicester apart from Filbert Street (the old ground) on several occasions.

So it would be virgin territory for pubs for me, which would be good.

The only problem is that it's a bit of a sod to get to for me as it's 3 trains and a tram and 4.5+ hours to get there.

If we're going to go for Leicester I'd probably have to stay over somewhere.

Leicester on the 22nd sounds fine by me.

It really will be a trip down memory lane, as I haven't been there since the early 1980s, when a good mate was at medical school. All I can remember about the place is drinking vast amounts of Everard's Tiger in the Old Horse, trying my very first doner kebab and eating a Chicken Phal so purging, it nearly took my lungs and bottom teeth with it!...Happy days.

It's my understanding that Out of the Vaults effectively moved & metamorphosed into The Pub, leaving an eatery at its old location. The side entrance to Kings is directly accessible opposite The Pub, across the pedestrian New Walk; I don't like it, it smells and the beer is dodgy.
I hope to attend this one, and will research a cunning plan to get y'all out to the Cow & Plough nr Oadby; better than the other Steamin Billy pub, the Western.

Very confusing that Kings and Kings Head are a few doors away from each other. I did the Kings Head through the rear door which backs onto the Pub and is a Black Country pub, and was very clean and tidy inside with a good range of ales including the Black Country ones. There was an upstairs terrace outside reachable by what appears to be a fire escape. Shame I didn't take a photo of the front. Should be in Leicester before March and will do both of them complete with photos to sort them out.

If Kings was the old Out of the Vaults / Vin IV I should know it as I went quite a few times before the Pub opened up.

Yes that is correct. Or at least was when I looked in The Pub in July...

Sorry for my late entrance into this thread (been away in the land of wriggly fish again ), but I think the options were the 8th or 22nd March..

Can't do the 8th as that's the Legends of Rock weekend in Great Yarmouth, and all those into tribute bands are cordially invited.
But the 22nd is good although, like others, I won't be able to commit until nearer the time in case work commitments get in the way.

Arriving at Leicester at 11.29am and leaving there at 20.36pm,that should be enough time for a serious tour of the city.

I'm pretty sure that won't be the case BF. I'll be keeping my travel powder dry until the megatkts become available. I'll post here when they do.
The Pub is a great start and almost certainly the best meeting point (lots of choice), I've given up on Barley Mow now this one is open. Must-dos include Swan&Rushes, Criterion, Gill's Salmon, Globe (but this was closed, maybe for refurb,on my last visit), the 70s experience (& price) of Shakespeare's Head. Of the Steamin Billy pubs I prefer Cow&Plough to Western, but is further out & logistics may not allow (Western is still pretty good). I quite like the Ale Wagon, although I can understand folk who opine it to have a slightly chilly atmos.

Of the Steamin Billy pubs I prefer Cow&Plough to Western, but is further out & logistics may not allow (Western is still pretty good).

I was going to suggest a bus trip out to Stoughton Grange for the Cow & Plough, especially as there is a bus stop marked just opposite the entrance on Google maps, but I've not been able to find any info about buses that stop there. (It's a "hail&ride" stop, which means there's no actual pillar or pole with a sign atop, you just wait hopefully by the side of the road until a bus turns up - which it inevitably does just when you've gone behind a nearby bush for a pee.)

The nearest actual bus route I've found is the 40 (0.6 miles) but it doesn't go to or from the city centre. The 31 bus stops a little further away (0.9 miles) and the 80 a little further still (1.2 miles - and only runs in university term time). :(

A better option might be to arrange to share taxis or see if we can get a mini-bus cab. Perhaps we can discuss when we meet at the pub (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66286/). Or should that be The Pub? ("Where are we meeting for the start of the pub crawl?" "At The Pub." "Yes, but which pub?" "The Pub on New Walk." "Oh, that pub!")

As a Megatrain novice how does this ticketing system work?
Do you need to turn up at the EMT info kiosk at LSP platforms 1 to 4 at least 15 mins before as it says on the confirmation ?

StP is one of the stations where they like to stamp your booking & tick their list before boarding but the little desk under the departure boards (1-4) was unstaffed last time I left from there, so simply showed my coupon to the guy on the gate, which is the usual m.o. elsewhere.
5mins beforehand should be fine, but I don't like cutting things that close...

I think you are building in excuses to incorporate the beerfest ROB! I can see 2hrs3 ew (from Manchester), £44 open rtn (via Sheff with change leaving time for a swifty in the Tap)...

Route depends on consensus of must-dos, but the beer range at The Pub suggests that would be a decent meet near-ish to station.
Problem is the diversity of arrival times 10:24(RB) - 12:29 (several), I'll be plastered before we reach pub2! maybe I'll hang around the library 'til everyone arrives...
Otherwise, maybe earlybirds could taxi to Oadby to tick Cow&Plough if logistics suggest it to be tricky later.
Has anyone counted confirmed runners? I could investigate how much we might be able to get out there & back for.

Well we have had 13 comfirmations,of which ten are arriving by train and I'm sure that number will swell.

I have to agree that The Pub (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66286/) is the obvious place to gather.

Thinking about a route and looking at the trusty Pubsgalore map of the city centre there does appear to be an arc of likely venues for the crawl from The Pub which have been mentioned by various people earlier in the thread namely

Kings Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/58907/)
Swan and Rushes (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20714/) with a possible diversion across Mill Lane Bridge to The Western (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20742/)
Criterion (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20609/)
Shakespears Head (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20700/)
Cafe Bruxelles (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/58892/)
Globe (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/58898/)
Longstop (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66618/)
Salmon (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/75386/) with a possible diversion to Bridle Lane Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20477/)
Ale Wagon (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55006/)

Quite a few people have mentioned The Salmon as high on their list so this route could be done in reverse order, rather than pop in there at the end of what looks like an extensive crawl.Either way the crawl will finish near the station.

A taxi ride out to Cow and Plough may be a good option for those arriving early but I understand this pub doesn't open until noon.Probably a question of getting a taxi back to where ever other PuGers have got to when finished in there.

Just some thoughts from me to get the ball rolling on where to visit on March 22nd.I am sure I have missed out some gems (Slug and Lettuce ) and included some dogs, worth discussing on line rather than waste valuable drinking time on the day;)

For those wanting to try the Steaming Billy beers, BF's suggestion of the Western avoids the long taxi journey out to the Cow and Plough. And looking at the map it seems that there's a route back to the Criterion via the Black Horse Tavern (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/20460/).

Anyone, like Roger, wanting to do more than 11 pubs will have ample time after their arrival in Leicester (10.29 in his case). (My train arrives at 11.54, by the way.) And if we meet at the pub (sorry, The Pub), that'll make 12 anyway (and Black Horse makes 13!).

Does anyone know what time The Pub opens? There's nothing on their website.

We have been giving this a little thought, and we will be in Leicester already for the beer festival. Ray has said he doesn't think he is up to the speed that the crawl goes round. We did do parts of both Nottingham and Liverpool on our own as we couldn't keep up.

We have decided that we will stay with the beer festival, and make our way over to the Salmon 4 or 5 ish, and if the plan is as the above list, you may well be around then. Ray could stay with the Salmon and I could join the rest of you doing the rounds. I haven't done the Bridle Lane Tavern myself yet, and the list has that from the Salmon. I’ve known for a while that I can’t make it, but I was hoping that that a miracle would happen and I would be free. No such luck I’m afraid :(
I look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing the reports… Have a great day lads and ladies.

I was hoping to be able to make it but not a chance now. Work is that busy it is getting ridiculous.

I was hoping to get Friday off and now I have got to work Saturday as well !! I suppose I shouldn't complain but I will anyway.

Have a good day everyone. Someone be a salmon and have a lager for me.

Snow forecast and cold, hope the pubs are warm and wet.

trainman
21-03-2013, 12:27
This snow is a little worrying.
The forecast says "4-6cm of wet snow", but word from Nottingham suggests 4 inches and "as much as 20 inches on higher ground"
I can only report as I hear, but really can't afford to get stuck up there, albeit only 100 miles..

After Quinno's experience? Good luck!
I'd made a note that maybe the Corn Exchange would be the better spoon option...

Especially as I had trouble focussing on the PC screen this morning and gave up trying to write anything and watched the 90 minute BBC documentary on Dr Feelgood instead

I have a photo of Parcel Yard in Leicester and although an inside one, thought I would put it on the site as there isn't one, but it is on my mobile and I can't work out how to get it on site. I have it on my facebook page, so have saved it on word, then tried to retrieve it for the Parcel Yard, but it doesn't work that way. Will keep trying.

PS. Found how to do it ok.

PPS. Now discovered there are a few waiting approval. Never mind.

Very enjoyable day on Friday, brilliant to meet up with everyone again and also great to meet new faces - me and Mrs Ale thoroughly enjoyed it.

Old Boots you certainly jogged my memory with that pic of me and my new pal in the Shakespeare. The best bit was when we were all leaving, he said 'don't go, I'll buy you a pint'. I rolled him a cigarette at the bar, maybe that's what started the love affair
