Seeing Lewes' Snowdrop Inn in 3 categories, and in the belief that I've never visited(!), despite several tours of Lewes, I had a look at their site.
Their upcoming 'Great Beer Exposition' (07-09Oct) features ales 'curated' by DarkStar head brewer Mark Tranter, including Marble Pint, Redemption Big Chief, Crouch Vale Amarillo, Magic Rock High Wire, Thornbridge Kipling, Worthington White Shield (in cask!), a blackberry Stout. & some strong stuff in kegs.

Not bad....

I like the York Tap but wouldn't say its the best cask pub in York never mind Britain but each to their own

I don't know how Mokoko in St Albans got on the list even if it just for best spirits pub. It's a horribly sterile cocktail bar. It used to be a pub called The Harrow, not a great pub but a proper pub.

I rate the Snowdrop and think it is a worthy contender. They also ran another good pub that was the Spotted Dog in Brighton before the strange 3 month take over by Cask Pub and Kitchen. I'm not sure what is happening with this site currently.

The Famous 3 Kings must have improved a lot since my visit three years ago as I wasn't overly impressed.

Only the shortlist at this stage, so we'll see what wins. I think I would prefer a competition where pubs were nominated, rather than entering themselves. Having been involved in other competitions, the advantage goes to people who can submit a good entry, rather than the quality of the thing being judged. And of course, only people interested in the awards dinner would bother anyway.

There are also quite a lot of categories. Having just been there, I am minded of the Marisco Tavern on Lundy, which bills itself as being regular winner of the best pub on Lundy award!

Sadly it is not upcoming but receding - that happened last year and so far, there's no sign of a repeat for 2012. It was, as you say, not bad, and I did request a 2012 event from Mark Tranter - he seemed keen, without wanting to commit himself, having been door-stepped by a random bloke in a pub.

Damnit, I was looking forward to that!
Oh well, maybe I'll head to Lewes and Snowdrop before Oct then.

We made it there Saturday and I liked it.
Good news is that the Expo is back this year, 05-07Oct.

Noted! Not sure about the home brew aspect, but last years' event was good enough to prompt me to return. Shame there's nothing yet on the pub's website (that I can find).

Ridiculous choice. The beer quality is average at best and it's better than the service. They must have caught it on a very good day.
