Hi all,

A mate has decided to get married in Wakefield and I am off up for the do. Hotel and train are booked and I have a few hours spare for an afternoon crawl. Any tips ?? As ever good bad and ugly please !!!

I haven't been there for 15 to 20 years. we used to stop at a pub there on the way to Leeds but I have no idea what it was called !!

"Don't talk to me about sophistication, I've been to Leeds "

There's some decent pubs here, but to be honest you may as well pitch up at Fernandes Brewery Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55466/) and stay there. A stone's throw from Kirkgate...

Hi Del

Quinno hits the nail on the head regarding the Tap, though there are several others worth considering: The Hop, Bull & Fairhouse and Harry's Bar are the other three that make up my usual mini crawl. Depending on time, The Red Shed, Black Rock, Boon's and The Inns of Court are also possibilities.

Of course, all these are in the centre. If you're staying in the burbs, I can probably offer you some local recommendations. If you fancy a meet up, I'll be more than happy to give you the guided tour, if possible. Obviously, date and locations would help. (PM me if you'd rather.)

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. We are staying in the Premier Inn and the do is at the rugby club. Me and my brother are arriving early for a few beers so I'll try and take in a few of your suggestions.

I'll probably have some questions for you closer to the time ( its not till September - we have got a stag do to survive first !! )

Cheers,

Del.

Del - I've done the guided tour. It's well worth the money!

I just assumed you'd take the equivalent in beer, at the end of August. :D (Fine tune nearer the time).

Indeed so, that little bus trip out was great (yes, I know I still haven't written them up yet...!). Will be in touch re August when my feet touch the ground on Thursday (dogsitting at my parent's place...). Definitely want to do Bradford and that Shipley-Saltaire rail line (is it the one that goes to Huddersfield?). Aside from those I haven't made plans yet...

I'd second the Fernandes Brewery Tap. Especially if you like the pale hoppy beers Yorkshire excels at.

Quinno, Shipley and Saltaire are about 1/2 mile apart! Shipley has recently been voted the most complicated railway station so be careful. If in the area, I'd recommend getting the West Yorkshire Rider/Rover, about £6, and doing Leeds-Saltaire-Bradford Forster Square. At Bradford visit Sparrow and Corn Dolly, then get down to the Interchange station. From there you can take in Halifax then Sowerby Bridge, before switching down to the busier line via Brighouse. Change at Huddersfield and the 2 pubs on the station Grove and the Sportsman, going via Dewsbury back to Leeds. There's a couple others around on these lines but it is truly great value.

I'm looking for a similar tour around Greater Manchester using our Line Rover this weekend.

Shipley station may be complicated but if you drank in all those places mentioned above and with all those changes, there must be every chance of going seriously wrong somewhere on the route ;) :nishelypished:

Thats one hell of a rail ale tour:notworthy:

Cheers Spinko, I'll split that over a few days as I need to factor in being back in Dronfield by 6-7pm!! :nishelypished:

Thought I would just bump this thread as my trip is this weekend. Where is the best place for watching the footie on a Saturday afternoon ?

I will be missing the Villa :( and the chances of finding a pub in Yorkshire showing Southampton v Villa on a foriegn channel are remote to say the least but you never know !!:D

In Leeds you have Shooters Sports Bar or the Elbow Rooms. I'd give a 50/50 chance. Elbow Rooms advertises its games outside in advance, but in Shooters you just have to look around. Shooters usually has a couple of ales on, but I generally go for the safer Brewdog bottles in the fridge. The best Elbows can do is Guinness.

Don't forget you're in Yorkshire, lad. :D Never mind the Villa, if there's any rugby league on the box, football in general comes second in many pubs.

Best pubs for sport with decent beer are Graziers on Market Street and Henry Boons. An outside punt is the Black Rock. The HD Sports Bar has loads of screens, but just sells fizz unfortunately.

You mentioned staying in a Premier Inn, which one? There are three in Wakefield. Also, the do at the rugby club - do you mean Sandal RUFC? If you let me know where the service is being held, I'll point you in the right direction for a swifty beforehand.

I expected to be outnumbered by "egg-chasers"

I am booked at Wakefield Central - Denby Dale road. By the Holmfield Arms and the Queens Arms.

The do is at Wakefield Wildcats Stadium. I have no idea where the service is as I have no intention of going to it  !! I am a confirmed Athiest and the only church I attend is the Church Tavern. I shall spend the afternoon trawling round the pubs .

You're actually only 10 minutes walk away from the centre. If you were to follow the Denby Dale Road straight over Ings Road you'll arrive at Graziers and the Bull & Fairhouse. If you look at a PuG map you'll see Harry's and The Hop are also quite close by. Fernandes isn't that far away, but in the opposite direction.

There are no pubs near the rugby ground at all these days. The closest decent pub is the Fernandes Tap. Fortunately, there's a taxi office just round the corner. Regarding the Queens and Holmfield, I've not been in either for years, although I believe they still do ale on hand pump. For what it's worth, there's a new branch of Majestic, just opened, a 100 yards or so from the Queens.
