My annual jaunt up to house/cat sit my Uncle's place in Dronfield has been confirmed. I am around 18-24th August so if anyone fancies a meet-up, I can do anywhere on the Derby-Notts-Sheffield-Wakefield-Leeds line and at a stretch can make Stockport, Bradford, Lincoln, York and Harrogate.

Let me know.

I'll certainly be around, so let me know what you're planning nearer the time and I'll see if I can fit in.

I should be free that week so let me know what you're up to, anywhere down the Leeds - Sheffield, ECML, or Leeds - Manchester lines are fine for me, Harrogate or York even more so.

Sorry, Quinno. A last minute holiday means we're going to be away that week. :( Oh well, there's always next year.

Boo to you! :p

Funnily enough I am just starting to organise my Nurvern holiday as my new job has kept me busy - the two hours of 'me time' a day in my old place has rather diminished!

So talking of my hols, I'll post up my draft schedule tomorrow evening and adjust it to suit other PUGers who are interested.

Have a nice holiday Andy :)

Bit late on the update but an all-day crawl of Salisbury on Saturday and a day of zorbing in Rutland took my spare time away.

OB, I am definitely up for Harrogate - what day is good for you?

Other jaunts inked in after research are Shipley-Saltaire-Bradford (new to me); The Grove, Huddersfield (loved it last year) via Leeds; Sheffield (outer pubs on the tram plus a Kelham Island revisit) and possibly Doncaster.

Mr Hatter, are you available for any of the above?

Spinko - how about Huddersfield and Leeds on the Friday?

Which Friday are we talking? 17th is doable although I'll also be catching up with old workmates at some point. Saturday 18th I could do a fair stretch of the Transpennine ale trail (preferably the "alternative" northern route with it being a Saturday!) on my way back to Manchester?

Weekend of 24th etc is provisionally planned for Mathew St Festival in Liverpool..

Friday 17th. Not available on the 18th as that's when my uncle gets back. I was thinking Huddersfield - Dewsbury - Leeds (then back home for me)

Sounds good to me - aim for midday in Huddy? Lots of good choices around there with plenty of lovely pale Yorkshire ale :D

Sorry for delay in getting back to you - was waiting to find out what shifts I'm rota'd for next week. I can do Monday 20th from about 1pm, or Tuesday 21st from about 4pm. If that fits in with your plans, I'd be happy to go around the Sheffield pubs with you, or Chesterfield/Doncaster/whatever.

Have I misunderstood? Your original post said you were cat-sitting from 18th to 24th. If it's this week that you're in Dronfield, then unfortunately I'm at work next two nights, and football in Hyde on Friday.

No sorry I have misunderstood myself, I arrive on the 18th and depart on the 25th so I am available as per my original post. Typed the wrong week for some reason!:muppet:

So yeah, I can do one of those days, Tuesday sounds good. How about Doncaster then? I've never been, have you?

Tuesday sounds good. How about Doncaster then? I've never been, have you?

Yes, I did an exploratory circuit earlier this year. I would recommend Cask Corner (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72950/), The Corner Pin (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33789/), The Salutation (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33911/) and The Plough (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33883/) (though not necessarily in that order - others may have suggestions which we can listen to or not). Also OK were Corporation Brewery Taps (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33790/) (if you like Sam Smiths), The Masons Arms (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33852/) (if you can tolerate market pubs) and White Swan (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33968/) (though the beer range is limited). I would not want to revisit Yorkshire Grey (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/62405/), Goose on Hall Gate (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33752/) or the two near the station: The Leopard (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33846/) and The Railway (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33893/) (because of the loud music rather than the beer quality).

If you want to do this on Tuesday 21st, I'll finish work about 15:35 and can be at the station by 15:50ish. There's a train from Dronfield at 14:59, arrives Sheffield 15:26. There are trains to Doncaster from Sheffield at 15:53 (slow - arr.16:32) and 16:11 (express - arr 16:35). I suggest meeting in the Sheffield Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68140/) and getting the 16:11. Return train from Doncaster 21:02 arrives Sheffield 21:26, Dronfield 21:49. (I have to get up early for work the next day! Also that's the last train to Dronfield - there may be buses.:))

I'll send you a PM with my mobile number.

Cheers

Ah, my caveat is that I need to be back in Dronfield for 8pm so the curtain-twitching neighbour doesn't let herself in and leave a condescending note. It's 50-60mins back so I'll need to be at Donny BR for 6:30. Maybe it's easier to do Sheffield instead, given your timings?

Friends of Ham - quirky little place, with an exceptional beer selection. I had a half of Rogue Brutal IPA and a half of Magic Rock Magic 8 Ball. There were around 9 different beers on and a great fridge selection. Food was sampled and enjoyed, although a bit pricy. I noticed a few people getting food to take away. It was a bit surprising how many staff they had on - I spotted 5, with 2 dedicated to the food (which was prepared next to the bar). There were a few oddities as you'd expect for a place still finding its feet. I'll be interested in seeing how they are coping in a couple of months' time.

North Bar - apparently I was very lucky in here with my two visits, the first visit I left just before a stag party arrived and the second just after they had left! Kirkstall Brewery's Prototype's 3 and 4 were sampled. I also had a half of Spaceman IPA from Brewfist of Italy, possibly my first ever Italian beer.

Beckett's Bank - one of Wetherspoon's better pubs! A Greenfield Summer Ice was had, very pleasant pint, and all the better for being served in a glass rather than the plastic container you get on Stalybridge station where you find most of their output.

Scarborough Hotel - solid as ever! Had one unmemorable pint but then a very good one by Thwaites called Sunshine and Lollihops. Really hoppy and fresh. They might get some competition next door when the new Spencer's owners sort the place out...

The Grove, The Hop, Golf Cafe Bar, and the station Wetherspoons were also visited. I didn't try Foley's...

Often visit Doncaster for the races looking forward to reading the reviews

If you're interested, this is our route:

Quinno went to the Barnsley Oak (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/41034/) at South Elmsall. He wanted to visit this one as it's in the GBG, but I couldn't get away in time to do this and all the Doncaster pubs too, so I met him at The Corner Pin (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33789/), which is my favourite Doncaster pub and is handy for the station. We then found our way through the bus station and across New Bridge (which Google maps street view doesn't cross, for some reason, and the PuG map shows as a thin line although it's a proper road) to the Three Horseshoes (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33940/). We then crossed back into the town and went to the Market Square to try the Black Bull Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57680/) and the The Red Lion (JD Wetherspoon) (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33897/), where my attempt to stick to halves was undermined by a) Quinno's insistence on flourishing his Camra discount vouchers and b) York Centurion's Ghost.

Next up was The Salutation (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33911/), on the way towards the racecourse, with just enough time for a cheese and onion pasty to be consumed as we walked. (That's one pasty each, we didn't share.)

From there it was back into the town centre for the Cask Corner (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/72950/), a "dive bar", according to the signage, then The Tut 'N' Shive (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/57691/) and next door to The Plough (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33883/), and finally back to The Corner Pin (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/33789/), which I may have mentioned is handy for the station.

Even handier is the Sheffield Tap (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68140/), where we had time for a final swift half before Quinno's train back to Dronfield.

I've reviewed all the Doncaster pubs listed above, on a visit in May this year if not on this occasion, and I'm sure Quinno will be adding his views in due course.
