View Full Version : Doubts about photo of closed pub in Sheffield

I have been checking up on some of the recently added closed pubs in Sheffield. The Adelphi Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/76040/) is listed on Sheffield History website (http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/895-adelphi-hotel/) and there is a photo there (you'll have to create a log in to access it) that bears no resemblance to the one we have on Pubs Galore.

In addition, it seems that the pub was demolished in 1969, and from what I can see of the cars in our photo, it was likely taken a good deal later than that. As a clincher, Arundel Street is a narrow street that just doesn't have that much traffic in it. The definition is too grainy to read what the sign on the front of the building says - it may well say Adelphi Hotel, but if so, it's a different one.

Hi SH,

It looks to me as if it is the one that was demolished in 1969 to make way for the Crucible judging by this site about it (http://www.sheffieldadelphi.co.uk/history.php) - not looked at the photo on the Sheffield History forum yet though.

Good research! That picture does look like the photo on our site, which would suggest that the other photo I found is the one that is incorrect. (Or that the hotel was redeveloped so that its appearance changed radically between one photo and the other.)

And that top part of Arundel Street was in the busier part of town - present day Arundel Street is only about half the length it used to be.
