I have around 50mins as a train change on Saturday in Chester, bearing in mind I'll be towing a case, I reckon I can fit two in, three is optimistic. Any recommendations as near the station as possible without much of a trek between them too? Or would one top rated pub a bit further away be a better bet? Any advice gratefully received.

Chester railway station isn't in the centre of Chester, it's a bit out on a limb and with only 50 minutes....

I'd suggest that you head for Mill Hotel (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/54826/) which has a large range of ales if no character.

On the way there or way back you could try Union Vaults (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/3419/) lots of character(s) but only 2 handpumps.

These two are still a bit of a walk though. It's probably close to 1/2 a mile to the Mill.

Always fancied trying this one just round the corner from the station Kash (http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/74158/) , the building looks intresting and despite the daft name is the Blueball brewery tap .

Just had a look and they have got a beer festival this weekend , 20 beers on

I was in the Old Harkers Arms last week and found it was only a few mins walk from the station. There's seating outside, which is very pleasant overlooking the canal. They get some of their ales from the Cross Bay Brewery in Morecambe, which only started brewing in July 2011. I tried their Sunset Beer 4.2, which was outstanding, so I know where I'd be heading!

Ok thanks chaps, The Old Harkers looks to be favourite for now, I'll go with the flow on the day and see whether there's time for a second. I suppose I could get an earlier train in, my train from Chester to London is fixed.

Ok thanks to all who suggested, I did the Harkers and Union Vaults before having to run for the train with a topsy-turvey case behind me. My fault for nipping around the corner to look at Kash, looks ok actually from the exterior. First rate suggestions, thank you all, reviews posted.

Thanks to the beer God, the train was on platform 1!
